Vacation - New Mexico & Arizona

(Thursday through Saturday)

Thursday we drove the pop-up camper back to Boulder, dropped it off at our friends and went home to pack for the rest of our trip. Poor Sully was a little confused. He was so excited to see us and looked at us in disbelief when we left.

We were excited to be on the road to one of our favorite places, Santa Fe, NM for the night. Most of you know that Kirk and I were married just north of Santa Fe in Glorietta so whenever we have a chance to go back we make it a point to do so.

We arrived in Santa Fe around 7:00 Thursday night all primed to eat at one of Kirk's favorite restaurants called Gardunos. It is a mexican restaurant that we always eat at when we are in town. So we walked down the street and up the stairs of the shopping area only to find that it was no longer there. So sad! We found another mexican restaurant but it just wasn't the same. We woke up Friday morning eager to try a restaurant that a couple we had met at Mueller State Park told us about called Tecolote Cafe. This restaurant is open for breakfast and lunch and was featured on the Food Network. I had the blue corn pancakes with pinon nuts....YUM! Kirk had their breakfast burrito, half smothered in green chile (the best I have ever tasted) and red chile. We will definitely eat there on our way back through when we head home!

After breakfast, we left Santa Fe and drove to Albuquerque. Kirk's parents lived there for 9 years and Kirk has great memories of the area. He drove me around and showed me where they used to live and reminisced about his time there. We went to Route 66 a popular restaurant on, you got it, Route 66 and ordered two milkshakes to go. We were on the road again headed to Flagstaff, AZ. If you have never driven I-40 through New Mexico you should some time. It is breaktaking as you see the mesas and the cliffs. Before you get to Arizona you go through a town called Gallup, a very western town. We got off the interstate to explore the downtown area and to look for a coffee shop. We stopped and asked a local if there was a coffee shop near by. He said coffee? You just want a cup of coffee? Then directed us to a local restaurant that serves coffee. Needless to say, there was not a coffee shop in their downtown area. Funny!

We arrived in Flagstaff around 6:00. I didn't realize this, but Arizona does not turn their clocks back so to our advantage we gained an hour. The town is very cool! We ate dinner at Beaver Street Brewery upon the recommendation of a local. After dinner we walked around the downtown area and at the center of town they had live music with people positioning themselves for the outdoor movie that was going to be shown as soon as it got dark. We were talking with a couple who said that there is usually something going on every night at the square. As a side note, Flagstaff was one of the places we had considered for church planting. It would have been a cool town to live in, but God had us destined for Boulder! We got up the next morning and went to a local coffee shop, Macy's, for breakfast. We had discovered it the night before when we went on a hunt for a coffee shop. It is definitely the place to be on a Saturday morning in Flagstaff.

After touring around the area a little more we headed down to Sedona and 102 degree temperatures. The drive was gorgeous! I was so excited to see Sedona again. I had only driven through the area about 20 years ago when I was visiting a friend that lived in Tuscon. I remember how vivid the color of the rocks were as the sun beat down on them. Kirk has never been to Sedona and I was excited for him to see it.

These pictures were taken as we were coming in to town. You can't see the vibrancy of the red in the rocks, but stay tuned for future posts!
